Bisalta

A peak full of mysteries
Bisalta or Besimauda is a 2,231m high mountain in the Ligurian Alps, bordering the Maritime Alps. Its name comes from the forked appearance (bis alta = twice high) which seen from the provincial town chief seems to have two peaks. The legend says that the top of the mountain owes its double top conformation to a diabolical intervention. A drunken inhabitant of the valley was walking a path where Bisalta, rising to its full height, covered the moon and therefore obscured the road. The man, cursing, said that he would sell his soul to the devil to see the mountain disappear. Suddenly a man appeared and told him that he would clear the view of the moon by the following morning in exchange for his soul. Once the contract was signed with a cross, little devils appeared who began to dig the mountain from the top. As the work was more difficult than expected, it turned out that shortly after midnight they had only scratched part of the top, dividing it into two. Since then, Bisalta peak has been double viewed from Cuneo!
